Telling Jews about Jesus
Christian Witness to Israel

To a people of promise the message of Messiah. For almost 1,900 years, the Church forgot the Jewish people. Christians forgot the Jewishness of their faith. They forgot that the first Christians were Jewish, that the New Testament is Jewish, and that Jesus was a Jew. Instead of loving the Jewish people by sharing the Gospel with them, the Gentile Church in the West became arrogant and persecuted the Jewish people. Because of that, Jewish people viewed Jesus as their enemy. Then, about 160 years ago, Christians in Britain became concerned for the salvation of the Jews and several societies were established to take the Good News of Jesus to the Jewish people. One of the first centres for Jewish mission was Budapest in Hungary and, during the nineteenth century, almost 250,000 Jewish people in Eastern Europe became believers in Jesus. Christian Witness to Israel had its origins in that great Gospel movement and today we have workers in Australia, Bulgaria, France, Hungary, Israel, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Christian Witness to Israel is committed to the apostolic principle stated in Romans 1:16 that "the gospel is the power of God to salvation ... for the Jew first". Our missionary strategy is identical to that of Paul recorded in Acts 17:1-3: we reason with Jewish people from the Old Testament to demonstrate and prove that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead, and that Jesus is the fulfilment of the prophetic Scriptures. Every two years a Summer School is held in London to help Christians understand Jewish history, culture and religion and also to teach them how to witness to Jewish people.

In Israel we publish literature for non-believers and books to help Christians understand their faith and to live for God. Many new believers in Israel are immigrants from Russia and Eastern Europe, so we publish literature in Russian as well as Hebrew. Our major project is a Bible for children in simple Modern Hebrew with beautiful illustrations. It will be published in five volumes, two of which are already available covering the five books of Moses and Joshua to II Samuel.

We have two websites www.cwi.org.uk and www.shalom.org.uk. The former site, for believers, contains details of our work, information about Judaism and witnessing to Jewish people, as well as online versions of certain articles from our quarterly magazine, CWI Herald. The Shalom site is an evangelistic site and includes Messianic Scriptures from the Hebrew Bible, challenging articles, testimonies of Jewish believers including rabbis, meditations on the weekly synagogue readings and Letters to Ya’acov, actual correspondence between our General Secretary and an Orthodox Jewish enquirer.
