Scottish Bible Society
The Story of the Scottish Bible Society starts at the beginning of the 19th century. Since those early days it has been actively involved in translation, publishing and distribution of the Scriptures. In the second half of the 19th century the Society was a pioneer in helping bring the Gospel to China, Japan and Korea, as well as working alongside missionary organisations in India, Africa and other areas of the world. For instance, the first Bible in a Nigerian language (Efik, in 1868, later used by famous missionary Mary Slessor) was published in Scotland.
The mission of the Scottish Bible Society is to provide God’s Word to all people, in a language they can understand, in a format they can use, and at a price they can afford. The Society distributes Bibles, New Testaments and other Scripture-based materials, in a range of media, in Scotland and throughout the world.
The Scottish Bible Society is a fully independent charity, registered in Scotland, and a founder member of the United Bible Societies (UBS). The UBS comprise 137 Bible Societies at work in some 200 countries worldwide, translating, publishing and distributing the Holy Scriptures. Today there are around 6,500 languages in the world; at least one book of the Bible has appeared in 2,303. The UBS are currently involved in over 700 translation projects, and beyond that there is still a great deal of work to be done before our mission is complete.
The Scottish Bible Society is a servant of the churches, working with all Christian denominations worldwide, and of course here in Scotland, providing Bibles, New Testaments, Gospels and Scripture leaflets as well as resource materials. It offers a variety of formats including audio tape, video cassette and CD to congregations, schools, retail outlets, mail-order customers, prisons, hospitals and other Christian organisations. The Society's unique BIBLEWORLD experiences, inaugurated in the 1990s, have attracted over 73,000 schoolchildren and given hundreds of teachers fresh stimulation in handling religious education. The Scottish Bible Society also has a volunteer network that includes approximately 80 Branches plus local church representatives and speakers, all helping to spread the Word of God and finance the distribution of the Scriptures at home and overseas.
